How to Use a Water Bong

Learning how to use a water bong is exciting, but there's a lot to it for those who haven't used one before. Water pipes come in all different sizes and types, so there are plenty of options to choose from. You can use tall, monstrous water pipes that stand at over three feet tall or small, portable and easy-to-manage water pipes, and they all elicit a different experience.

For example, let’s say that you’ve recently just purchased a small water pipe in the shape of a beaker. The instructions for this one are pretty easy: add water, add your substance of choice, grab a lighter and smoke away. Other combinations may have water bong parts like ash catchers, drop downs, dab nails and more that may be a little daunting to take in all at once.

If you don't know how to use a water bong, don’t sweat it — we’ll walk you through it. First, we’ll explain two different types of water pipes and their various parts.

The Best Water Pipes: Stemless Vs. Stemmed

When learning how to use a water pipe, you'll find the steps for using either a stemless and stemmed style are basically the same, even though the pipes look drastically different from each other. Still, it's important to be familiar with the different water pipe parts to fully understand how each type of pipe works.

Stemless Water Pipe Parts

Let's first look at the parts of this 16-inch water pipe. This device is made up of many water bong parts, like the awesome spinning disc splash guard. The neck, which sits slightly above the splash guard, is made out of an impressive 50x7MM of Thick Ass Glass.

As you move down the apparatus, you'll discover two honeycomb disc bong parts. These act as a percolator and feature small holes which aerate the water as you inhale, allowing for smoother and more enjoyable hits.

Lastly, the 16MM thick base is one of the most important water pipe parts of this setup. This base will keep your water pipe standing sturdy on your desk, table or nightstand.

Stemmed Water Pipe Parts

Beaker water pipes, like this stemmed downstem beaker, are more suited for first-time glass pipe owners due to their wide base. With a beaker base, you get a large circumference that will be sturdy for any table or desk and therefore easier to use.

The beaker water pipe shown here also has a diffused downstem, which is a downstem that has little holes in the bottom to diffuse the smoke without a separate percolator. Diffusion is literally the smashing or dividing of bubbles to increase the surface area. The more surface area there is of the bubbles, the cooler your smoke will be. Therefore, this diffused downstem is one of the most treasured water pipe parts of this particular stemmed beaker.

Now that you understand these common water bong parts, it’s time to start using them.

How to Set Up Your First Water Pipe

Setting up your first water pipe doesn't require much time or effort, but it's important that you do so correctly to get the best results. If the water bong parts aren't set properly, you may tarnish your smoke experience or even ruin your product in the process. Here's how you set up your first water pipe:
  • Inspect the glass pipe.
  • Locate the removable water pipe parts, such as the bowl.
  • Insert the bowl into the opening (stemless or downstem).
  • Add enough water to cover the percolators, but not too much.
  • Test out the water levels by taking practice pulls. If the water reaches your lips, you have too much!

How to Use a Water Bong for the First Time

Now that you know more about water bong parts and accessories, it's time to test out your new rig for yourself. Let's look at how to use a water pipe through five steps:

  1. Insert your bowl into the downstem and add your herb of choice.
  2. Light your herb with a lighter or hemp wick.
  3. Place your lips over the mouthpiece at the top of the water pipe, and slowly inhale.
  4. Remove your bowl and take another hit to clear out all the smoke remaining in your water pipe.
  5. Take as many hits as you'd like!
